Podcaster Portrait:  Roman Mars of 99% Invisible

Roman Mars, of the delectable 99% Invisible, founding member of Radiotopia. If you're interested in, well, the general concept of being interested, check his work out.  He is the living embodiment of my G.K. Chesterton mantra:  "There can be no such thing as an uninteresting subject.  The only thing that can exist is an uninterested person."  This dude is profoundly interested.  Give him a listen.  It will rub off on you, and you will find yourself living in a more magical world than you had ever suspected.

Podcaster Portrait:  John Hodgman

Today's podcaster portrait:  John Hodgman, of the podcast Judge John Hodgman, amongst a host of other hilarious wonders.  I once laughed so hard at THE AREAS OF MY EXPERTISE (his first of three volumes of Complete World Knowledge) that I had to get off the bus and throw up behind a bush.  If that won't sell you, I don't know what will.  You can find him and all of his goods and services here.

Hodgman has appeared in various guises and incarnations over the years.  This portrait was an attempt to capture the essence of all of them.  A Hodgman of no era.  A timeless Hodgman.  An Ur-Hodgman.

Today's portrait:  Comedian, Podcaster, and soon-to-be-TV-host, Pete Holmes! I first discovered Pete through his lovely, moving, and hilarious podcast You Made It Weird.  It has gotten me through many, many hours of work and genuinely helped me during hard times in my life.  Pete, if you see this, thanks for everything, and congrats on hitting the big time!

My Kumail Nanjiani portrait went over so well that I've decided to start posting these comedian portrait exercises more regularly.  I'm getting to know Painter a little better and using these as an excuse to play with different tools and styles.  Some are turning out better than others. I'll put the keepers here.  Today:  Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts of Comedy Bang Bang!

1 Hour Stop Motion Animation:  Destroying an Old Sculpture

This clay model of mine has been taking up space for years.  I wanted to make a record of it and get rid of it.  What better way than a little experimental animation? Shot in my back yard in 1 hour.

Wedding Coloring Book for Cow and Claire

9/11/2012

I'm home again and mostly settled after our trip to Chicago for the fantastically wonderful wedding of my brother and the love of his life, Claire.  It was utterly delightful in every imaginable way.  I can't envision a better way to spend a weekend.

It was a whirlwind tour, mostly packed with wedding stuff.  We did manage to steal away for an afternoon at the Field Museum, where we saw Sue, the world's largest and most complete tyrannosaurus skeleton.  I got some great material for a future video while we were there, so Sue and some of her dinosaur compatriots will probably be making an appearance here soon.

There were a zillion kids in attendance at the wedding, plus a general atmosphere of childlike glee surrounding the festivities, so Claire asked me to make some little Coloring Books for the reception. Here they are:

Full credit for the coloring book idea goes to Beth Morell of Something Else Studios. She inspired Claire with her lovely coloring book for our friends Phil and Joy.  I didn't realize I was encroaching on her concept  when I started working on this, but I chatted with her after I found out about her coloring book, and she was extremely kind and happy to share the idea.   What a nice lady!
